Is Neuschwanstein Castle Worth It? Honest Review

If you’re planning a trip to Bavaria, you’ve probably seen photos of Neuschwanstein castle – the fairytale castle that looks straight out of a Disney movie. That in fact inspired a Disney movie.

But with millions of visitors every year, long queues, and strict ticket rules, many travelers wonder: Is Neuschwanstein Castle actually worth visiting, or is it overrated?

Here’s an honest, no-fluff review to help you decide.

Why should you trust me? Because I’m a tour guide who regularly guides groups on day trips to the castle.

What Makes Neuschwanstein Castle Worth It

The Scenery Is Absolutely Stunning

It’s not just about the castle. It’s about the entire setting.

Perched in the Bavarian Alps, surrounded by forests, lakes, and mountains, Neuschwanstein is easily set in one of the most beautiful locations in Germany.

The view from Marienbrücke (Mary’s Bridge) is iconic. And yes, it really does look like the photos.

It Truly Feels Like a Fairytale

Built by King Ludwig II of Bavaria, the castle was inspired by medieval legends and the operas of Richard Wagner.

Even today, it feels a bit surreal, almost like a movie set. Fun fact: It inspired Disney’s Sleeping Beauty castle. And sometimes, it’s busy like Disneyland, too. 😬

It’s One of Europe’s Best Photo Spots

If you care about photography or social media, this place delivers.

With its dramatic mountain backdrop, Neuschwanstein is one of the most photogenic places in Germany and probably Europe.

Then, there is seasonal beauty. Come multiple times a year and you will find it looks different every time, thanks to snow, autumn colors or summer green. All this can be captured from multiple viewpoints.

… and the views from the castle do not disappoint, either. This was in March. With kind permission of the Bavarian Castle Administration.

The Downsides (What People Don’t Tell You)

It’s VERY Crowded

Neuschwanstein is one of the most visited attractions in Europe.

Expect crowds, especially in summer. But it’s also busy in winter. The bridge can get especially packed. Every day, numerous tour buses visit the castle, so expect peak numbers at midday.

Crowded even in March. With kind permission of the Bavarian Castle Administration.

If you hate crowds, I can only suggest that you not visit. There are plenty of castles and palaces in Bavaria that are far less crowded and make for a more relaxing experience.

The Ticket System Is Strict

The system operates with timed entry slots. There is no flexibility if you’re late. And if you miss your time slot, you will not be able to enter the castle.

Tickets must be booked in advance, so you have little flexibility in case of bad weather etc..

A few tickets may be available at the ticket center in the village of Hohenschwangau on the day, but don’t bank on it.

The Interior Tour Is Short (and Limited)

The guided tour inside the castle lasts only about 30 minutes. Only selected rooms are shown. You are ushered from room to room with little time to look at anything in detail. No photos allowed.

Many visitors expect more and therefore feel (not just) slightly disappointed.

Getting There Takes Effort

The castle is not directly accessible. It requires a 30-40 minute uphill walk. Alternatively, if they are operating, you can use the shuttle bus or horse carriage for an extra charge.

The walk is not difficult, but not effortless either.

The Castle is Not That Old

If you think „castle = really, really old“, think again.

Neuschwanstein was designed based on medieval castles, but it was built in the 1870s and 1880s.

If you want a really old castle (almost 1000 years), go visit the Wartburg.

So … Is It Worth It?

YES – If You:

  • Love scenic landscapes
  • Want iconic travel photos
  • Are visiting Bavaria for the first time
  • Don’t mind crowds (or plan smartly)

MAYBE NOT – If You:

  • Expect a long, relaxed, immersive castle interior
  • Dislike touristy places
  • Are short on time (expect to wait in line repeatedly)

Honest Verdict

Yes, but.

It’s not (just) about the inside of the castle. It’s about the views, the setting and the overall experience. If you go with the right expectations, it can be one of the highlights of your trip.

Are you desperate to see this particular castle? Is this possibly your only trip to Germany ever? Then go, by all means. It is going to be as amazing as it looks in the photos you have seen. Unless you are visiting during a snow storm, in which case you won’t see much. 😬

But keep in mind, it is going to be busy and expensive and possibly very rushed. So if you want to take it slow, or you can’t stand the crowds, then skip this trip.

But isn’t it, like, the best thing to do? Well. In my personal opinion, you are not going to die if you don’t see Neuschwanstein castle. Yes, it is beautiful and impressive and everything, and you will get some great photos. But Neuschwanstein is not the only place to visit in Bavaria. There are loads of smaller towns, castles, and other amazing places that are far less crowded and touristy. I just need to find the time to blog more about them. 😉 But as a first step, check out my Great Day Trips from Munich post!

Whatever your final decision may be, Happy travels!
